one school district advertised a janitorial position. It was humiliating when one-third of the teachers in the district applied for it, as it paid a third more than teaching!

Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. The Janitorial or Maintenance staff need to be able to not only clean but repair and maintain the physical facility. A task in my experience, far beyond most teachers.

Yeah…as a two-year-old lead teacher, spending time teaching some of the basics that are needed in later year for education…I make about $20,000 a year, BEFORE taxes

Very true, but it’s the useful application of those taught skills, reading, writing, math, etc., that allow those who do to command a greater salary. Without learning those basics, thanks to the good teachers (few and far between) the doers would be unable to perform as they do.Mom’s comments are well taken and deserve serious consideration.

I am a “gajillionaire” but not in a financial sense. I’m richly blessed with being there for my students watching them grow and learn. I’m also blessed by working with other wonderful teachers (we all get along and work very well together). I’m even more richly blessed with a wonderful husband that adores me and encourages the important work I do. I’m also blessed with a daughter I love dearly. And above all, I am blessed with salvation. Those parts of my life are simply priceless. Do I sometimes get frustrated and discouraged?? Of course. I prefer to look at the “bigger picture”.

Oh yeah, let’s privatize teaching so big corporations can decide what gets taught in schools!

I taught Jr. High English for 35 years. I was rewarded throughout my career by so many students. By their writing, by their going on to useful lives and careers. By so many showing up at my retirement party….no, I never made much financially, but I gained so much from the experience.

@erinblissBecause the government doesn’t exercise control over what gets taught? I mean really. Big business can’t do any more harm to the curriculum than what our government is already doing to it. Kids are placed primarily by age, which is the worst way to measure how intelligent someone is. Smart children are held back, and children that need extra help don’t get it just so we can keep up with what your “supposed to know” at any given age.
