I sure wish I could visit my Arizona (mother’s side) and Iowa (father’s side) cousins more often while I’m stuck in Washington. Although I have an Arizona cousin and three Wyoming cousins (the Iowa cousins’ cousins) living in the same town.
OMG this is SO my cousins and me as kids. My Grandfather thought it was so funny he started “tearful goodbyes” by being REALLY over dramatic and wailing to where we would all stop and start laughing at Grandpa, hug each other and wave. To this day tearful goodbyes are brought out when anyone is leaving.
I find it more than a bit rude and presumptuous that there are those few who will criticize Lynn for the content of a strip written decades ago. The beauty of this strip is that it shows a family as the years pass with its warts and beauty marks, its joys and sorrows. Ellie is human, thus subject to human frailty so if someone objects to her ‘look’ or to her allowing Michael to ride a horse without proper riding gear circa 2012, that person has missed the point of the strip.
Ellie is a beautiful and compelling character because she is human, and feels and does things that we all have felt and done, even if we don’t care to admit some of them. I am moved by the humanity of this strip each and every day: no gags, no cheap laughs, just comic strip characters “keepin’ it real” far better than most of us can in real life.
Thanks to Lynn for this rewind — you bring a little extra human touch into my life every day.
