As long as Congress refuses to act, and continues to remain firmly gridlocked on this issue, then I applaud the President’s use of his own power to make this incremental improvement in immigration policy.
Then again, W set a dangerous precedent for using the power of the presidency for frightening purposes.
What I love is the fact the “conservatives” never actually read the Constitution, or law, but it didn’t bother them when Reagan (Iran Contra), Bush 41 (Panama), or “W” (too many cases to list here) ignore both.
Most all of these people he wants to help have been here most of their short lives. Most of them have never even been to visit Mexico. The vast majority want to be here, be good citizens, pay taxes and work hard. many are the best and brightest in the new generation.
“I don’t have to show you any stinking constitution, either….”Though I don’t have a problem with what he wants to do, it should be CONGRESS that approves of the action.
^Yes, NOT “AMNESTY”, just a two-year delay in deportation “process” of review.
Bush did TWO, as Maxwell Smart, or “Laugh In” would say, “very, interesting”. One, was, Executive Orders used to be easily tracked by subject matter. Bush stopped titling them, so you had to know, or find the number, making them “less than transparent”. Second; was the matter of abusing “signing statements” on a regular basis, to “invent” laws, as he signed them, and declared he could IGNORE THEM!
As to the Constitution, started in law enforcement just as the Miranda issue was coming in. I found that even AFTER giving Miranda warning, you could still get subjects to talk fairly readily, as “crooks” often aren’t among the nation’s brightest bulbs. Also, started a case that DID go before the Supreme Court, and we DID win against the original Reagan orders on random drug testing. That was later changed, after a few more Reagan appointees came on and “saw the light”, that same dim-bulb that has lit the right wing on the court since. (Supreme, AND “inferior” court appointments, which have been heavily blocked by REPUBLICAN Senators for a long time. It’s about that confirmation process, that even a small majority, and “leader” in the Senate, can’t change.)
In the begining of Obama’s Presidency some bloggers attempted to state that President George W. Bush and many other former Presidents had rarely exercised the Executive Order privilege granted to the President of the United States by the Constitution.
This is incorrect.
All Presidents have used the Executive Order or a form of the Executive Order to command and operate the Federal Government. Some used the Executive Order to push through laws when the Senate and Congress failed to move forward on what the leader of the free world felt were urgent and necessary laws that needed to be enacted immediately.
George W. Bush® (2001-2009) had a total of 291 Executive Orders throughout his 8 years in office. President George W. Bush started with EO 13198 and ended with EO 13488.
Ima: (and other cons) You are adroit at dodging all the facts that we “libs” often are critical of Obama’s performance on the economy, environment, and failure to stand firm for “single payer”- the intelligent choice for health care. You can ask bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders about his military “failures”, or the Somali pirates- OOPS! Can’t ask them.
Don’t “love” Obama, but recognize the opposition he’s faced, and the idiocy in the “conservative” House, with also the “blue dogs” in both House, AND SENATE, who oppose EVERYTHING!
Now, how ‘bout citing anything negative “the devoted” say about “W”, or “Right hand of God Reagan”?? That’s not “love”, it’s slavery to false promise, and total failure. (costly wars, corporate profit, while the debt, and the REAL economy, tanked, for THREE DECADES!)

This is NOT amnesty. It is no longer deporting illegals that came in as children. What Reagan did was amnesty.

@mikefive: no doubt you were equally incensed when reporters used to shout at President Reagan at news conferences and White House ceremonies.
