    I wondered about that too, so I did a quick check online and found 3 sites (there are many more) that confirm Ripley’s findings: Ethnologue says there are 842 individual languages (of which 830 are still living languages), our State Dept says PNG has three official languages and approximately 860 other languages, and another source says simply, that there are over 800 languages. It’s hard to disprove Ripley!

    I knew the fact about Papua New Guinea. It is my favorite country. Maybe even because of the languages.
