My wife got a KIndle and now we don’t talk! She even plays the damned thing at family get-togethers. At a birthday party Sunday and she sat and played solitare on the damned thing. I know, I know, signs of something deeper!
Arlo how would you feel if you had started with a mainframe that took up two floors of the engineering building and used punched cards? Nothing like IT to make you feel obsolete.
A smart phone will never replace a pc with a full keyboard, mouse, and most importantly, a nice big monitor that you can actually see without squinting. Decent gaming is not possible on some little mini device. To me, a smartphone is a major downgrade from a powerful full-size computer. There will always be a market for devices with a large viewing area.
I still talk to my wife and she to me, provided that we are in different parts of the house (as a minimum) and we are using a telephone connection and provided that the dog does not need her attention.

Fortunately, my wife is a Luddite. I, on the other hand, can lose myself doing foolish things on the computer – like commenting on comic strips. :-)
