I’m just as troubled by Santorum as the rest of you, but I don’t think it’s right to blame Catholicism in toto. There are lots of good, sincere Catholics. I’m not Catholic, so I’m not defending my own, but these sweeping condemnations bother me, no matter at whom they are directed.
Most Americans are more scared of Rick Santorum’s phony theology than anything Praesident Obama would propose. For Santorum, this year is 1312 not 2012.
It’s amazing isn’t it? Every time one of the Republican Presidential candidates emerges as the front runner, he immediately whips out his tongue and uses it to commit poltical seppuku. Rick Perry did it, Herman Cain did it, Mitt Romney did it, Newt Gingrich did it, and now it’s Rick Santimonious’ turn.
To give you an idea of how touchy the Mother Church is about the Inquisition, although I’m not Catholic myself, I attended a Catholic High School
For English class one semester, we were studying the play, Man of La Mancha,
This was the same year the film came out, starring Peter O’Toole and Raquel Welch….so our teacher arranged for the class to attend the movie on a field trip.
UNTIL the ‘good’ Fathers ( and Sister ) of the school administration got wind of the plan, When they did, they immediately vetoed the idea, on the grounds that Man Of La Mancha contains scenes from the Spanish Inquisition.
I later saw the movie on my own, there was nothing graphic in it, no torture, no auto-da-fe, or anything like that. ( It’s a MUSICAL, for crying out loud! )
But it dared to even TALK about the Inquistion, and so that was that.
IEO: Remember Jesus, whom you allegedly represent and speak for, His message was of Love and compassion…Love thy Enemy…Hmmmm? Or do you only take your scripture form the vengeful parts of the Hebrew Old testament…or is it from the Inquisitors of the Spanish Inquisition? As a Christian one is suppose to have love in there heart and openly express and demonstrate that love…or is it that you’re more in love with your fancy robes than Christ and His Christianity? In either case your vitriol says more about you than it does true, benevolent Christians. As a man and a representative of Christ and the Church, get a hold on yourself.
A trial court in Iran has issued its final verdict, ordering a Christian pastor to be put to death…. Nadarkhani had not practiced Islam during his adult life (age of adulthood, 15 in Islamic law… age 19, which was when he converted.) but still upheld the apostasy charge because he was born into a Muslim family….His first option was to convert back to Islam. When he refused, he was asked to declare Muhammad a prophet, and still he declined.“The world needs to stand up and say that a man cannot be put to death because of his faith,” said Jordan Sekulow, executive director of The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). Eddie, the remarks being made here have to do with Rick Santorum’s (and the other candidates) apparent ignorance of or total disregard for Article XI of the U.S Constitution (as dtroutma keeps pointing-out) and the 1st Amendment. Rick does this when he implies or states that he would use religion tenets and laws, once elected, to govern by. That would be in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution which clearly mandates that the U.S Government must conduct all of its operations in a wholly secular manner, as our founding fathers understood, and for very good reason. What then is being pointed out and addressed is not hate of the Catholic Church or any church, but rather Rick Santorum and other’s improper references and proposed direct use of, if elected, their religion tenets as “laws of the land” by which to run this government. If Rick or any elected official does that, it would be in direct violation of the U.S constitution.
Fuzzy: think of the “Mortara Affair” and the fact that technically the Roman Inquisition has never really ended. Granted, they stopped frying people (literally) some time ago, “excommunication” and other “punishments” are still available. Granted theocracies like iran are violent and dictatorial, but listen to Santorum, just once, and you can see why I quite rightfully regard him as “Sharia Santorum”. Different cast, same script.

While shooting for the title of Grand Inquisitor he panders(?) to those who would be disciples of the Grand Wizard.

But I also think the Church’s position on contraception is idiotic. Just to clarify.
