The expression refers to times before the Reformation when Church taxes had to be paid to St. Paul’s church in London and to St. Peter’s church in Rome; originally it referred to neglecting the Peter tax in order to have money to pay the Paul tax.
I don’t think there ever was any confusion. “Rob Peter to pay Paul” has been around a lot longer than the folk group. I think we were just trying to play with the Hilbillyman reference. I’ll just stop with that before I get into any “John” in an alley inferences…
