NY ‘ers are saying “not as bad as expected” which ignores the “near miss” aspect. Much of New England is now experiencing the worst flooding, EVER, and there WILL be more in the “new normal”. While the damage couldn’t be prevented, the preparedness this time has definitely saved lives and property. Those who figure the preparations and warnings were “overblown”- WILL get blown away next time.
Harly, I spent over 40 years in different elements of “search and rescue”- fires, floods, cliff rescues, avalanches, earthquakes, and am very familiar with the degree of human stupidity that leads to “Darwin Awards” as well as economic loss, like building on barrier islands, or with flammable materials in fire zones; or just ignoring warnings above waterfalls.
Small point: Vermont has NEVER HAD a storm and flooding as intense as this before. About that excess water the storm picked up, and size, not the “winds”. Climate change is not “political” it’s merely a fact, identified in the 1950’s as “Human caused”, but the laws, and thus, impacts, have changed. period. Now about human “input” to the problems, that IS changeable, but- political.
When a 150 year old building gets wiped out, it indicates something. The widespread damage hasn’t been “recorded” before. The real damage from many storms isn’t the wind, it’s the rain. After Katrina, Lieberman wrote legislation to allow FEMA to act and get ready BEFORE storms hit so response would be quicker. While Cantor seeks to cut emergency funding (outwardly claiming only that "cuts must be made elsewhere), the simple fact is we WILL be requiring more for future events. Even taking into account the inflation in costs of repairs, past amounts won’t be enough.
It will be interesting to see if the “media” continue to cover the ongoing costs of recovering from this storm, and any efforts to prevent future “events” from becoming more costly. It is doubtful, because storms aren’t part of the “war on terror”.
Trout, do you ever get tired of making things up? How many times do you have to be proven dead wrong before you either go away or realize you’re a complete tool?
