A lot of people are asking DC Comics that same question. Their responses are a little less than encouraging.

Interesting, and sad, that they’re still ignoring girls. Maybe they only hire male writers/illustrators…?

“Bag Girl #1” comes out in about six years, and is cancelled after about ten issues. It’s the way of the comics industry.

Mark Tatulli, THANK YOU!Yes, this is still a problem, sad to say. I taught for years. If you want to have a hit, make a movie/book/etc. with a female protagonist. Girls will watch/read it over and again. Even if it is terrible, they will see/read it again & again — just to enjoy a female hero role model for a few hours.Ask any strong woman you know who they idolized growing up and they will rattle off the names, from Diana Rigg (Avengers) to Lucy Lawless (Xena) to “The Paperbag Princess” to Abby Wambach.Oh, and don’t make the “Lionel Pink Train For Girls” mistake. Xena was a huge hit because she wore black, not pink, and was anything but stereotype. There’s a huge, untapped market out there, just begging for some writers & artists to fill it with some creative quality. “Comics industry” be damned. They’re bound by focus groups and worries about demographics & profit margins. Only rebels can do something new.I can’t say it enough, Mr. Tatulli: THANK YOU!!!!

    madmarge “You didn’t mention WordGirl.”

__She’s a very good choice… Bob’s a great sidekick, too. It’s great to get other species involved in the hero biz.

In the TV realm, I believe The Bionic Woman was much more popular than The Six Million Dollar Man. (Of course, it had someone who could actually act in the lead role.) Lindsay was never scantily clad, and certainly wasn’t “stacked”, but she seemed to appeal to everyone.

True. And “Bones” seems to appeal cross gender, too. It would seem that good things come in interesting packages.

__Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a pretty smart and cross-gendered fan base, too. Hmm.

Female stereotypes SELL better than groundbreakers. Just look at how ridiculously popular Twilight is.

And the anime community goes absolutely spastic over Naruto, despite every single female character being removed from being important to the story in any way.

I guess we didn’t expect to her kissing the hero.
