The only way to deal effectively with junk calls is waste a human’s time. Then the caller learns that yours is an unprofitable number. You don’t have to waste much of your own time. If the call is placed by a machine, press the button to get to a human. Tell the human you are interested, then put the handset down, without hanging up, and go about your business. If it is convenient, pick up the handset half a minute later, and say “I’m sorry; I was distracted. Would you please go through that again?”. Unfortunately, there are times when courtesy is wasted.
416 is Toronto, the center for most large businesses in Canada, not particularly associated with call centers, which is probably why D & R chose it. Call centers tend to be in depressed areas or developing nations, where there is a surplus of people who will work for low wages.
My favorite way of dealing with a telemarketer is to say, “Oh, would you excuse me for a moment – There’s something on the stove.” Then I put down the phone and don’t come back.
Depending on the product pitched and whether it would need financing (and they almost always do), you can always ask; “How will this affect my bankruptcy?”They usually won’t bother you again

Fun can be had … just be as polite as possible and wait for the sparks.
