Really? From what I hear on NPR it was Obama adding to the demands at the last minute. I’m not saying that the Republicans shouldn’t give a little regarding some of the deductions and credits, but the problem is the spending (for which both parties are to blame, but which only one party appears serious about truly cutting.)

Congress has control over the purse and ALREADY spent this money, making commitments to spend it over the past 30 years, under both Republican and Democratic Congresses. The bills are simply coming due, and require raising the debt ceiling to be paid. Congress knew they would need to raise the debt ceiling when they made the spending commitments. It is enormously irresponsible and hypocritical to use the debt ceiling as a lever to control future decisions on taxing and spending. It’s the equivalent of buying a luxury car with your spouse, then when your overall spending catches up with you and the bills are too high, to say, “I’m not going to pay these bills until you agree to spend only what I say you can.” You’d be punishing your own credit rating, not your spouse, and that is exactly what Congress is doing to the Nation right now.

If you were maxing the credit cards, you cut up the cards. You cut cable and learn to live closer the the temperature of your climate (that ugly sweater Aunt Ann knit you). You decide that rice and beans taste better than steak. Hand me downs become retro. Family entertainment is a walk to the library.Look at that, you didn’t have to take a second job, just live simply.

As always, Slowpoke is right on the money. President Obama’s job is to execute the laws. Let the Teapublicans fouling up the Capitol raise the debt ceiling or not. If they don’t, then we will see serious U.S. financial crisis similar to what happened when the proto-Teas refused to pass Bush-Dick’s emergency stimulus in September 2008, and Senator McCain had a nervous breakdown (“I can’t run a campaign AND vote in the Senate! You gotta stop running, too!!”—remind me, regressives: Why did you want him as president?)Obama must continue to inform the people—shouting through the rightstream media—that America’s loss of credit, the stopping of federal payments & the work of the government, & the tanking of Wall Street are all the fault of the Teapublicans that 20% of Americans elected last November. If you want another ruination of America, then continue to vote Teapublican.
