My deepest congratulations for this “guest strips” week, Scott and John (or should I say only Scott ?) :) I didn’t catch it at first, but when it came to me that was all a work of homages, I almost fainted :) The last two were the greatest ones, (even if the Larsen homage was a really good one) but it’s a “Wow” from the heart for all week’s work. Congrats again (not that I don’t appreciate your daily work on working daze … just that the idea of homaging other notable artists is simply wonderful and well done …)

I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again, I’ve been writing comics since 1989 and worked with a LOT of artists but Scott is the best I’ve ever seen at cloning other styles. It’s a gift. He’s the Rick Little of cartoonists.

Yes, I did take a vacation- after I finished these strips that I did while John was vacation. But he had more gags for me that I drew as soon as I got back. They’ll run next week, but the strip will have its standard look. Maybe in the future we’ll have another homage week and touch on some artists that were missed this time. And yep, Roy could well be the grown up Jason.

And the style cloning was something I had to do a lot when working for Nickelodeon Magazine and DC’s Cartoon Network Comics

Loving the Looney Tunes-styled hole in the walls.

And like most cartoon holes int he wall, it gives the impression that the building is made up of a series of very narrow, parallel rooms. Anybody remember the really early Simpsons, when their house seemed to have rooms going off in every direction, and no fixed blueprint? Note to Matt Groening: There were a LOT of great little touches in the early years that were lost when too many other people began to over-think it all.

@scott roberts Amen to what you said. Simpsons lost their way circa 2000 when they changed from genuine wit to, seemingly forced, slapstick style. You, Scott, display a genuinely subtle and intelligent wit. Please don’t change.

I’ll try not to! In the 1st season of the Simpsons, we videotaped each episode and watched them right back, laughing our heads off. Over the next few years, we watched them back later in the week, but still loved ‘em. By the 10th year, I didn’t always care if I saw them again right away, and by now, it’s been years since I’ve seen more than the occasional new episode. But I have a feeling that Groening would have pulled the plug years ago if FOX didn’t want it renewed again and again.

Still when on the Simpsons is still a good watch. Not on par with years 5-9 but still an all around solid show.

This is Foxtrot’s design isn’t it?

Yes, it’s Foxtrot right down to the style of the logo. All week I’ve been imitating the logos associated with the features we’re spoofing. And my pick for best overall season of the Simpsons is, and has been for years, season 2. For me it was one good episode after another and no letdowns. And it was still Klasky-Csupo animating. They would leave a year or so later to focus more time on Duckman, and all the post-Rugrats shows they were developing for Nick. But they had a knack for those characters that I never felt Film Roman has really had. It all got too refined, and too far from the Groening spark.
