Consistent, loving discipline doesn’t have to involve a spanking, either (although I believe it’s sometimes the most appropriate and effective method – for infractions such as deliberately disobeying a direct order). Discipline needs to be firm, it needs to be loving, and it needs to be consistent. It also needs to work – “Let the punishment fit the crime” is usually a good rule of thumb, since it teaches logical cause and effect. You can’t behave nicely? Then you go to your room, where you won’t affect others by your behavior. You left your razor-sharp pocket knife where your little sister could get it, when you had been told to keep it locked up? ALL your pocket knives are confiscated for a time (and you have to have a long talk, and/or write a paper, about why what you did was dangerous and wrong).

I agree – I had many spankings (more often switching with a balloon stick) and spanked my 4 kiids when needed – They all grew up great (as did I)

I’ve seen worst a four year old using the F-word on her mom; several times that I thought she was singing. Mom just stood there hamming it up with a pal like it was totally normal.

This twerp would be home with the pizza man following us to tell his mom to pay for it.
