We have a Hit, there is a young lady and she wants to do all the bad things existing. Her friend has the name “Novak”. She sings, she wants to do the bad things and the refrain is always " but Novak doesn’t let me!"
When Calvin becomes a teenager, the roles will be reversed, and his Mom will never be able to tell whether he is listening or not. Of course, at Calvin’s present rate of growth…..
Today’s strip contains references to radical terrorism and self-poisoning. Over the past 3 weeks, Bill Watterson has also brought up the topics of bullying and extortion; life after death and reincarnation; murder in the movies; money, greed, and power; control over human destiny; the futility of war; and songs that “glorify depraved violence, mindless sex, and the deliberate abuse of dangerous drugs.”
For those who are looking for the comics to be an escape from the real world, perhaps Calvin and Hobbes is not the ideal choice. On the other hand, I do highly recommend a different 3-week period from back in January — the series with Calvin vs. the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons:
My mother could hear a match book open further than a cat can hear a can of tuna open. I set my last fire in the closet where she wouldn’t hear. The nice firemen gave me a plastic fireman’s hat and a comic book with Smokey the Dalmatian. Tell me therapy doesn’t work. Wonder if there are any matches in the house.
“…a radical terrorist?” Is there another kind?Apparently, Calvin said radical for emphasis, but Mom missed it anyway. I guess she’s primarily concerned with things she considers Calvin most likely to do.
Hi algurka. When old strips are rerun, the wording is not changed. This means that sometimes the syndicates have to skip a strip that is too obviously out of date. For example, Peanuts skipped the January 1st rerun this year, because Snoopy was wearing a banner that said 1964. Calvin and Hobbes has been skipping most of the snow-related strips recently, because we have been reading February 1986 reruns during June and July. But the terrorism reference in today’s Calvin and Hobbes has not lost any of its relevance, as we know all too well.
Bill Watterson drew this particular strip perhaps 6 months after the 1985 bombing of Air India flight 182 out of Canada, which killed 329 people, mostly Canadians (I had to research that one). At that time, Americans were also remembering the US hostages in Iran (1980), and the killing of members of Israel’s Olympic team at the 1972 Summer Olympics, which was heavily televised.
There have always been radical terrorists. Even back then, would be dictators have used the threat to take away the liberties of the populace. See the familiar quote wrongly attributed to Martin Niemöller.
Mom knows some things are idle threats, or just said for a reaction, or can’t be done before Calvin’s attention span is used up. But the real threats—those she heads off before they can materialize.
Yeah..it took me a LONG time to figure out my parental units A and B had a filter in their ears…they listened to everything…just didnt acknowledge nonsense
All Calvin seems to be is the snail from “…snails and puppy-dog tails…” as far as what little boys are made of. Moms ALWAYS know their own because we remember our genetic heritage…and what we did as a kid. Wonder what kind of trouble Dad got into?
Contrary to most of the response commentary regarding your rants (extended thought processes really), I do enjoy your comments. Keep on keepin’ on !!!
For others with differing opinions, I appreciate your thoughts as well. I was once told that to hear only one side of an argument is to understand half of the discussion – and maybe not even that much.
As for radical terrorists; Secret Police, Ninjas, the Cult of Thugee come to mind. They have existed for hundreds of years if not thousands, and will continue to exist (in various forms) for thousands more.
I have read arguments that the American Founding Fathers, as well as being lauded as having great foresight, basically started a right-wing counter-revolution against the government of the day. Not many people realize that all of the signatories to the Declaration were millionaires. John Hancock being worth in excess of $50 million (1776) at the time !!!
Providing comments that everyone does not agree with lends an opportunity to expand one’s conciousness.
While the First Amendment guarantees Free Speech (among other things), it does not guarantee ABSOLUTE Free Speech. Oliver Wendell Holmes dictum of “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater”.
For those of you who do not like extensive ramblings (such as this) feel free to skip over the comments. And as long as the commentaries (such as Hobbes) are presented in a non-abusive manner, I (and others) will continue to take them at face value for what they are worth.

Hobbes, when this strip originally ran, were there “radical terrorists” or has this been updated to reflect the (unfortunately) present time?
