A friend and I used to yell while we stood in our farm yards. Sound traveled well enough we didn’t need the phone. In those days everything had to go through an operator. Loved the Fifties……..

When I was a kid we talked using two cans and a string (not a wire). The main problem was that the string had to remain taut at all times for it to work. Talking through a garden hose worked much better.

At the science museum here in Charlotte (Discovery Place) they have (had?) a pair of huge parabolic dishes that if you spoke into one, the sound would travel over a distance to the other one where some listening in could hear it.

My dad would have this Cuban whistle whenever he was trying yo find me, my sister or my mom at stores. Found out later almost every Cuban father had his own special note! Otherwise, chaos would insude in South Florida!
