Depending on your latitude, the earliest sunrise was about a week ago, and the latest sunset is about a week from now. This confuses a lot of people.

The longest day was Dec 14, 1976, Chem 101 final. The sky turned black, thunder cracked, and “Abandon all hope” sounded optimistic. It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly

Even more confusingly, if you define “day” to mean the sun’s apparent movement from nadir to nadir (or zenith to zenith), the longest day occurs at perihelion, which was January 3 this year and January 5 in 2012.

At 43 degrees N, todays sunrise/sunset times are 05:12/20:34, giving 15:22 hours. Tomorrow’s times are 05:13/20:35, also giving 15:22 hours. It takes a few days before the differences in seconds accumulate enough to be noticable.

I just checked Wolfram Alpha. in Boston, it’s 15:16:53. Tomorrow it’s 15:16:52, so today is longer than tomorrow by a second.

    But who’s counting? (ME!)

How come nobody is commenting on the plant he is carrying? It looks a lot like a baby cannabis plant

It stays light longer the further west you go in the Eastern Standard Time Zone, but also if you go north. In northern parts of the UP near the Central Time Zone, it stays light till darn near 11…
