One does wonder, though. Now the Irish Republic has welcomed Liz Battenberg, does this mean it has come to terms with its past and will it apply for admission to the British Commonwealth? Which usually means we assuage guilt felings about Empire by bunging financial subsidy and overseas aid we can ill-afford to our ex-colonies…
