GI loan. GI is a slang term for armed services personnel—”government issue.” A GI loan is a loan program for armed services personnel.

This was 11 years after the end of WWII, in one of the most destroyed areas of Germany, the Deutsche Mark had only exsited for seven years (it was released in 1949, replacing the absolutely worthless Reichsmark, which had still been used as currency for four years after the end of the war). The average monthly wage in 1956 was 360 DM, a house cost around 22,000 DM. 6 million DM in 1956 would be 14.46 billion Euros or 17.6 billion USD today. It’s also surprising how much the value of the Dollar has fallen. Today 6 million DM = 3.067.750 Euro (fixed exchange rate) = 3.740.760 USD.
