when my brother was in militia, they referred to his “Army left” from time to time. i also heard of a unit composed of truck drivers for whom the cadence was counted as “clutch, brake, clutch, brake…”

A MAD poem that suits the solemn occasion:

Out of the boat and into the dark… Goodbye Philips, hello shark!

When I was little I always thought port was whichever side was closest to land, so depending on the direction of the boat, port could be left, right, or even behind the boat… I was a very strange little kid.

ds133, I used to think the same thing. LOL! That is until I started to use the Port / Left four letter rule that FishStix pointed out which a cousin taught me whenever he would take me out on his sailboat. “Hard to port!” Didn’t know what that meant first until the boom came swinging around and clipped my head. From that point ever after, I have always stayed well aware of myself when on ships/boats/water craft.

Thanks for the left/port tip. I’ve always had problems with keeping those straight. (Not a lot of ships in KS.)

I’ve always had a hard time keeping it straight too. Love how they put CHOMP in those big colourful letters.

Another bit of nautical lore for you landlubbers out there, “Red, Right, Returning”. Learned that when I had my boat in San Francisco Bay.

It’s easy to tell – just look which side of the ship the steering board is on! (Oh d a r n they don’t use those any more do they.)

Also, port wine is red, so Port = red, Starboard = green.
