2010 is just around the corner. That’s going to be interesting, as will 2012. People will no doubt be sick of all this propaganda popping up everywhere – first the prime time TV shows, and now the funny pages. Now I’m starting to understand what it must have been like growing up in the Soviet Union. If PRAVDA says it, it must be true, right?

Volunteering doesn’t cost a dime of tax money. What’s your objection?

Is this some sort of veiled evangelist preaching?

because that’s the only type of evangelist preaching I can stand …

It’s not overtly Christian, if that’s your question. It has a “message”, though, that freely giving time and energy to help others can be rewarding, even if you can’t figure out a way to make a buck off it.

Some people find the suggestion offensive, though. Go figure. The gag is that Peter is one of those people, but it relies on the reader’s knowledge that Peter is the one always looking to make a profit. In retrospect, that HAS been sort of a hallmark of Peter’s personality for a long time, but I don’t know that it’s ever been explicitly remarked upon in the way that, say, Curl’s surliness, Wiley’s hatred of women and water, or Clumsy’s clumsiness have all been clearly established. So even people who’ve read the strip for many years have been caught off-guard by this week’s continuity.

Not if he can’t make a clam out of it (The strip’s currency - or at least it used to be.)

…..Maya calendar From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar forms the basis for a New Age belief, first forecast by José Argüelles, that a cataclysm will take place on or about December 21, 2012, a forecast that mainstream Mayanist scholars consider a misinterpretation, yet is commonly referenced in pop-culture media as the 2012 problem.

For example, Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, notes that “[f]or the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle”. However, she considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be “a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in.”[12]

    Same source , Rapture .

The concept of the rapture, in connection with premillennialism, was expressed by the American Puritan father and son Increase and Cotton Mather. They held to the idea that believers would be caught up in the air, followed by judgments on the earth and then the millennium.[4][5] The term rapture was used by Philip Doddridge (1738) and John Gill (1748) in their New Testament commentaries, with the idea that believers would be caught up prior to judgment on the earth and Jesus’ Second Coming. The concept of a pre-tribulation rapture was articulated by Baptist Morgan Edwards in an essay published in 1788 in Philadelphia.[6]

Left or right if you didn’t go in 70 AD , it may be a tall and very long row of cotton for all . The Martyrs in Messiah ? Luk 21:19 “Possess your lives by your endurance!

I have no problem with volunteering. for the record, I have and do give of my time (and my money).

What I have a problem with is propaganizing. Some may have noticed that this same theme is popping up all over the place. Its not just this specific day’s edition of this strip.
