There are a significant number of people who like Palin, God alone knows why, and a significant number who are curious about what she has to say, and those people have ordered their books on Amazon or bn.com already, which means that all the books ordered will give her bestseller status on her release date. Fine.
Does it have any larger meaning? Debatable. The truth is that it doesn’t take much to reach bestseller status, and even a massive blockbuster bestseller has so few people relatively speaking that any TV series with a similar number of viewers would likely be cancelled. (Stephen King said that, not me.) We’re talking about maybe 20,000 books in the right bookstores. Even if I’m off by two orders of magnitude, two million people is a fraction of voters.
So I wouldn’t go celebrating her popularity as such.

“As an acquiring editor, one of the first things I look for in an author’s proposal is the “platform”, that is, the writer’s reputation and public visibility – and the ability, willingness, and experience to promote themselves in the marketplace.”
