My sister got revenge on her BF for a practical joke he had played on her: she wired tiny jingle bells inside the car (under the seat, inside the door, under the dash - nowhere that interfered with anything vital). Not loud enough to be obvious, but enough of a “what the foxtrot?” sound to drive him insane for a week taking apart the car trying to find it.
When you try to tell the mechanic that weird noise, he only hears Ka-Ching. Do you go to the doctor and say, “There’s something wrong with me, I don’t know what”? Go to the hairdresser and say “I need my hair done. Whatever”?
This used to be common practice. Especially on the interstates when they were fairly new. A motorist would stop for gas at the old full service station and while filling and windshield washing the service guy would spray a little oil near a tire and tell the driver they had leaky brakes. There were other scams but this seemed to be the most common. Another would be to have two driveways and a ditch between. They would put a reflector on both sides of the ditch. Notice, only two. This would make drivers think to turn between them, into the ditch Then a very fast tow truck would be there to get them out. Imagine that.
i had a muffler place to that to me. They said like in a month, I’ll be hearing rattling noises, and need the exhaust replace. Sure enough, it started making noises. But I crawled under it myself. They pulled a shield loose, which was laying on the exhaust and rattling. So i just took the shield off lol … the exhaust was fine.

Now I’ve got to crawl underneath my car and remove the Clackity-Clack noisemaker. Maybe I’ll replace it with one that goes “Zoom Zoom”.
