I’m guessing this summer reading list thing is purely American … never in 14 years of public school did I have homework after the school year ended!

myhaircut - I spent every year of school here in the states and I never had assignments after the year ended either.

I never had summer required reading either, so I think it is a more recent development. I’ve homeschooled my kids, and just worked on getting them to love reading, then now they’ll read for fun. I found out as a child it was much better to read anything than to say I was bored, because then my parent would give me additional chores.

We never had summer required reading in Florida, until a few years ago. I think when you don’t force them to do it, it happens naturally, but on the other hand, I love to read.

Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall, give me a good book to curl up with..

RRAmom - Good points. I have also loved reading all my life. My wife raised her two children without TV and they are avid readers too.

most of the students who get summer reading are honers or avanced placement (AP) students. they/we have a list of books to read over the summer and have test in the first week or two of school while everyone else is still learning the ropes again. In AP we had to write essays after the books and then we did projects on them…. its not bad. Reading is fun. i love to read.
