A lot of work from Jake = Any work from Jake.

Jake wouldn’t last long in the Advance Auto store near me. The garage mechanics aren’t likely to wait for their customers to get their car back.

Hard to imagine. Normally people like Jake can come up with an excuse faster than an auctioneer can rattle off a price.

Excuses aren’t always available when you use so many!

And the boss was watching me like a hawk every minute of the day.

I have a coworker who will not do anything until he is told to, and spends the rest of his day looking at Youtube videos. It steams me that he still has a job.

When I was working while in college I worked at large local homegoods store (for anyone who would know – Fortunoffs) in their fine jewelry department.

I went in after a year to meet with one of the managers. He told me that my sales were less than other employees, but that they were aware that I did other things on the floor – going to get replacement gift boxes, straightening inside the display cases, helping the cashiers, etc. – so a good manager is aware of what employees are actually doing beyond statistics.

(Side story about people one meets while at their job – One evening I had a couple and their 12 year old daughter who were looking for ring as a gift for the girl. I tended to be working in the “small ring department” and I was showing them rings for her. She wanted to see an opal ring. I took it out and handed it to her and mentioned (mostly to her parents) that “we don’t recommend opal for children as it is very delicate”.

It took my sister-in-law a number of years before she forgave me for calling her “a child” – yes, that was how I met my future in-laws – husband and I had our first date the weekend before.)
