Must be their first cat. We didn’t see one of ours for three days once. My husband went out one last time to call him, and heard him answer from inside a neighbor’s storage building. They had been in there three days before. How many times did we walk close to that shed, calling him, in those three days?! And he was mad at us when he got out!
If a cat can see you, he assumes you can see him. I used to walk my cats in the redwoods for a couple of hours a day. If Johnny Depp were a hundred yards away in a bush, he would give me an “answer up” meow right away. If he were five yards away in the open, he would sit there and wonder if I had gone blind. Of course, as a camouflaged tabby in low forest light, he was amazingly hard to see. Eventually, he would take pity on me and move an ear or something. It is absolutely uncanny to see a cat “break camouflage” right at the spot where you have been looking for five minutes.
We had a cat that, when still young, got stuck up a tree. This cat NEVER meowed. So we spent all day looking for him until we finally looked up into the correct tree.

Studies have shown that cats recognize their names. They just can’t be bothered.

We had lost cat up at cabin. Kept calling for him, kept hearing meow.
