In the 1980s I worked a summer landscaping gig at the state university I attended. On of the full-timers I worked with had been on the job for 35 years without ever taking vacation, sick days or any other leave. As a result, the university told him to start staying home a year and a half before his official retirement date. He apparently hated his spouse, because he said he dreaded not having an excuse to leave the house each day.
We didn’t get leave during military training and when I got to base it was a case of use it or loose it. My particular shift was 7 on, 3 off, 7 on four off. So I took a week between days off, against the rules but if leave was approved it was their fault. I got a rough time in the section but my boss said I had to use up my leave. Then my application for officer training went through.
I tried that. Was saving vacation time to have enough (when paid back) to pay basic bills until retirement. Before I had enough, I got laid off. Double whammy – no more day pay and not enough vacay pay.

But he’ll need a referee to grant that retirement

Coaches who don’t properly manage timeouts to the benefit of their team usually do get retired early.
