The people who come out on top in the unions are the union bosses and the politicians they support. I used to know a fellow who went to work for a large construction contractor. His official job was to inspect construction sites. His unofficial job was to pay off the union bosses. He would bring in a wad of cash and sit on one side of the table. The bosses would sit on the other side. He would start laying down cash until they told him to stop. If this payoff didn’t happen, a strike was guaranteed. The workers never saw that money. When contractors add extra to expenses for unforeseen complications, this is one of the things they need the extra money for. This kind of extortion is an expected expense – the cost of doing business with unions.
I was a member of two different unions. I also worked as a manager over members of another union. We never saw ANY signs of corruption. That’s not to say there aren’t times when unions have been dishonest — just as times when employers were not honest. However, unions built America’s middle class. Without unions, oligopolies and monopolies would crush the workers.
I worked at a store that belonged to a food workers union. The pay was good, but then every paycheck they took out fees and union dues. Ended up with basically getting minimum wage. I worked as a cashier. One cold day, I came in with a cold, and the boss (female) asked me to go get the carts in from outside. I asked if I could stay in, since I had a cold. When I was told to go do it anyway, I said why can’t you send one of the women out there? Are you sending me just because I’m a man? My hours were cut after that, from full time to 20 hours/week. I quit after that.
