When Joe Biden accurately stated that SOME Republicans wanted to either abolish or “sunset” (allow to expire) Social Security and Medicare, lying Republicans falsely accused him of lying.
Sure, not all of them support abolishing Social Security and Medicare, some merely want to raise the eligibility ages, reduce the benefits, slow sown the cost-of-living adjustment, privatize it, or undermine it in other ways.
But Biden never said they ALL wanted to abolish or “sunset” Social Security and Medicare, only some of them. And the next day Biden was ready, with printed proposals from Florida Senator Rick Scott (who was chair of the 2022 senate campaign committee) to “sunset” ALL government programs every five years, and videos of similar proposals from Utah Senator Mike Lee (to specifically abolish Social Security and Medicare) and Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson to “sunset” all government programs EVERY year, not every five like Rick Scott. Both Lee and Johnson are high-profile senators, not exactly back benchers. While I doubt such videos and proposals got much air play on Faux “News” and other right-wing conspiracy-theory, reality-denial hate media, they were widely reported and circulated elsewhere.
The good thing is that Joltin’ Joe took their lying taunts, and used them to rope them into a trap, forcing them to all stand with him and publicly pledge not to cut Social Security or Medicare. They tried to “own the libs” and got outsmarted — “owned” — by the guy they keep underestimating.
One senator had one proposal that was immediately shot down. Never submitted as a bill
However there was one proposed bill in 1975 to sunset all programs like SS and Medicare that actually made it to the floor for a vote. Submitted by Joe Biden when he was in the senate. And he did it again in the 90s.
I lived abroad for a number of years, did some part time but was basically a stay at home mom. Fast forward to returning to the US, divorced with 2 teens and no support from their foreign father. After part time jobs and 3 years of nursing school, I was finally able to get a good job with steady pay and benefits, but after all those years of not working in the USA, when I retired, my Social Security payment was on the lower end of the scale.
That got me wondering what single women who don’t work outside of the home do for income when they reach 66 + 10 months.
Medicaid and CHIP (for children) are still on the chopping block and the GOP is still whetting its hatchet. I think about 1 in 4 Americans qualify for or receive Medicaid and CHIP.
The GOP wants to be able to hold these programs hostage to leverage their own interests. Social Security and Medicare won’t be any different than the debt ceiling.
Just cut the SSI cap on earnings and match capital gains to wage tax rate. Solvency problem solved with more surplus for better senior benefits. What, you say none of the republicans would ever go for that? Why?
the “evil woke mob” has ALWAYS wanted to preserve social security and Medicare. it’s the republicans who are obsessed with eliminating them so stockbrokers and insurance companies can take over and siphon off all that sweet sweet money.

People do seem to accept that kind of cognitive dissonance with very little effort… and without even noticing what they’re doing.

Yes, it’s evil to give back what people put into Social Security.

Please, House of Representatives, pass Senator Rick Scott’s measure to require Social Security and Medicare to be reauthorized every 5 years.

Republicans don’t want you to have to register guns, republicans do want women to register menstrual cycles.
There is nothing to fear, except getting shot anywhere you go.
Republiguns, getting the government off your back and right onto your reproductive system.

They wouldn’t have to do that if they would tax the rich. I miss Eisenhower.

I don’t understand. All the Republicans are doing is trying to keep the government’s hand off folk’s Medicare just like they are demanding.
