While the locomotives don’t burn coal these days (mostly, anyway), there still are coal cars on the rails.
John McPhee’s Uncommon Carriers describes the coal trains that pick up coal in Wyoming and deliver it to places like Atlanta power stations. They are literally miles long. I have seen those myself. So maybe the odd piece of coal shakes loose and out of the coal cars even today.
