    Coal is dirty and deadly. And even if Trump had been successful in getting the coal mines re-opened—he never even tried—there is no market for it. Also, because of automation, about a tenth of the previous workforce would have found jobs.

    Let them go pick up pieces of coal from the railroad tracks like my father and his brothers did during the Great Depression!

    While the locomotives don’t burn coal these days (mostly, anyway), there still are coal cars on the rails.

    John McPhee’s Uncommon Carriers describes the coal trains that pick up coal in Wyoming and deliver it to places like Atlanta power stations. They are literally miles long. I have seen those myself. So maybe the odd piece of coal shakes loose and out of the coal cars even today.
