It hardly qualifies as one man one vote when a rancher in Wyoming’s vote counts as much as those of all the people who live in an apartment building in New York. All national elections should be on total votes, not by state. Go ahead and have an electoral college, but have them report the vote totals they have, add them up to get the winner. Wyoming would have 75% Republican votes, but since that’s only 2000 people ( not really, but didn’t seem worth verifying accuracy), it wouldn’t give the low population states the ability to own the national elections.

The constitution is supposedly about being of, by and for the people, while inserting clauses to ensure that control remained with the equivalent of an aristocracy. The men who wrote it were all white, male and land owning, and that was their mental definition of “the people”. The Electoral College was just one example of the way that the “right people” could allow everyone to vote, and then correct the result if the riff raff didn’t make the right choice.

if you want to hear a repeat of the mess we are in at the present, listen to rachel maddow’s podcast called ultra. that will keep you awake all night- in the 1940’s, this country was going thru the exact same thing we are in right now. at least we came out of it ok. now- i’m not so sure.
