Columbus Day vs. Indigenous People’s Day always makes me think of something similar someone I used to work with once said: While we celebrate July 4th as Independence Day, the British also celebrate July 4th, but they call it Good Riddance Day.
A slight paraphrase of a century-old sociological adage by WI Thomas says that reality is defined by its consequences. My feeling is that the consequences of genocide and slavery outweigh the consequences of European market expansion and nation building in defining what is real about this “holiday”.

Italians would do good to give Columbus up. Odds are in favor that he was Portuguese using an alias.

I’m OK with indigenous people day, but I always wanted to change it to explorers day
Columbus was an explorer, one of very many who deserve more credit than he does

Celebrating the founding of America by honoring a guy that never set foot on the main land, is like praying to a white Jesus.
