I remember the days when upward mobility was part of my consideration for accepting a job. Now, I just want to have fun. That’s much easier to do since I left management.
Sometimes the promotion isn’t a good thing. Had an hourly technician in the plant. He was often called to prepare new tooling when there was an unexpected change in orders. Earned a good amount of overtime as an hourly. The production manager offered a transfer from my engineering group into production as a salaried person. I advised against it since he’d get no overtime. He took the “promotion” and the number non-overtime call ins exploded. Overall, he took a pay cut. Soon, I move to a research position. He called to say he wished he had listened.

Didn’t get the promotion you wanted. But you did get promoted that’s better than nothing.
