Every Academy Awards there’s one or two!!!

There needs to be more trombone at those shows.

For those, like myself, who watch an award show only in alternate decades, “play off” is to actually “play over” an actor’s “acceptance” remarks until he or she gets the message or becomes inaudible. Either way, it is the signal for a couple of beautiful people to come and escort the winner off the stage.

… or spend your days conducting cacophony in a classroom. :)
