I guess it’s the same thing as when they stare at a wall with such intensity we think there must be SOMETHING they see.

Cats can hear things with their ears that you will never hear. They will see things in the darkness beyond the ken of Man. Their whiskers brush the dew, as you will never feel. But what they are smelling on the carpet is most probably you. :)
