With inflation ballooning by May 2021 (5% up from 1.4% in December 2020), we should have seen a rate hike. Probably another 0.25% by August 2021 with another 0.25% by December. That would be 0.75% in 2021 to try and ease inflation.
Instead, the first rate hike (0.25%) was in March 2022, after inflation exceeded 7%, then more concentrated hikes in May 2022 – 0.5% and June 0.75%. 1.5% in four months, long after the inflation stallion had left the barn.
And progressives wonder why conservative economists and even liberal ones like Larry Summers question what is going on with this administration.
