“Language of the Cottonwoods” by Clay Jenkinson. This book covers a TON of topics. There is a great section of managing our rivers. I also liked the way he talks about respect for Native Americans, especially the Plains People.
“Dead Pool” by James Powell" Written in 2011 this book predicted our current situation and outlined possible courses of action. Many of which, sadly, won’t work any more.
Remember back when it became really difficult even for Republicans to not notice things going bad with climate on a scale unlike ever previously recorded in human history? A couple of decades into the 21st Century?
Sure, even into the 2020’s they still waved everything away with anecdotes of previous instances of drought, floods, famines, and so on. But. Fewer were as fervently convinced AGW climate change was a hoax each year as the number from the year before, despite their indignant protestations to the contrary.
Unfortunately, too many remained oblivious to the increasingly rapidly closing window of opportunity to act in time with preventive measures that still have at least a chance, minimal though that chance is, of avoiding looming calamity to a sufficient degree to be at all confident in the future survival of surface life on planet Earth.
Well. You can either have an economic structure which enables well less than 1% of the entire human population to amass all but unfathomable personal fortunes while ultimately, in a matter of decades worst case or 2-5 centuries best case, resulting in civilizational collapse rendering wealth, or even purchasing power at any scale, a historical civilizational relic, …
… or forgo blindly zealous adherence to an economic paradigm which has placed civilization in this existential predicament, objectively analyze the feedback (outcomes) of the historical paradigm, and design/implement corrections at least minimally necessary to avoid exterminating (humans and every other species of fauna and flora) all but some subsurface microscopic life forms.
The conservatives around the world have been hoping for the day scientists say it’s too late, to justify making things even worse, and keep doing what they’ve always done, exploiting every inch of the earth with no regard to the environment and little to no pollution controls on their refineries and factories.
The thing they don’t understand, like smoking, it’s not too late until we are all dead. What a goal the so called conservatives have set for themselves.
I’m not perfect, but I have to live in the world with what we have currently, and what I can afford. I am all for moving towards a better environmental goal. My next car could very well be electric. My current daily driver is a fuel sipping low cost to buy Chevy Spark. I still have my old 1994 diesel pickup I used for hauling horses and a camper, but not for everyday driving. It has not been used much for several years. Had come close to replacing it with a less fuel efficient, but more environmentally friendly gasser, but then the auto manufacturers started price gouging big time, so the old truck remains.
One thing I am very much against is regressing into poor environmental practices, such as Russia and China prefer. It makes me furious that people will degrade pollution controls on their cars in order to get a few more miles a gallon. The cost to the environment, is not worth a few more miles to the gallon. It just isn’t.
