Current school schedules in most places are ending the teacher year in mid-June and beginning the teacher year in mid-August. AND the two months between are UNPAID time off. The last year before I retired, I kept track of the hours I spent outside of my contract in the school building doing my job, attending meetings, and taking classes in order to maintain my credentials. I was stunned to realize that I had given a full free month of extra work to the school system.I loved what I did for 31 years, but I never got used to hearing people sound off about what an easy job I had. By the way, the second year out of college, my daughter was making $ 10,000 more a year renting cars than I was making after 31 years as an educator.

Remember when parents talked about teachers being heroes because they realized how much work goes into teaching one child (their own) compared to a classroom full of a variety of children with different personalities and abilities. That didn’t last very long.

Medical professionals were heroes until they told people to wear masks, then they became fascists.

Food workers were heroes because they enabled people to order their dinner from the comfort and safety of their home. Then these workers became selfish and demanding because they wanted better compensation, protection and many went to find better jobs.

In the UK system the school holidays are set around the university holidays, which were set so the younger sons of the nobility could come home to help get the harvest in. Other breaks are set to include religious holidays, leading to terms . The whole system is archaic and not fit for purpose. But the inertia against reform is massive.

Teachers: low pay, no respect, increasingly large classes, criticism from all sides. What a horrible job, why would ANYONE choose this career except love of our kids and a desire to educate our next generation? Three of my children or their spouses are teachers and I see what they do every day. How dare ANYONE criticize their efforts or suggest that they should have to carry a weapon to do their job!!!

I guess you don’t know many teachers. During their unpaid time off for the summer they’re taking classes, going to training events, prepping for the new school year, and in general, doing everything except goofing off.
