I have nothing against the Chinese on a personal level – they have proven no less or more culturally insensitive than the Europeans here in the Americas.
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with “buying” your way into the hearts and minds of other countries – they “invest” in another country; it is logical that they would “expect” something in return. We’ve done the same, off and on for well over two hundred years. The fact that their culture is a bit more “ethnocentric” than ours matters little in the long run.
Other people need help, they offer that help with the occasional string attached, but note that such strings are never hidden – to my knowledge, no one being given Chinese assistance has ever been “surprised” by the content of the fine print in their agreement.
I will give you that it is possible that this is all a part of some long-range dastardly plan to screw the West over for the despicable way the West has treated China over the last couple of hundred years, but if you care to go down that path of “retribution and revenge” your paranoia makes you no better than a certain orange-tinted individual and I refuse to assume that China’s out to get us for past ill-treatment.
