    I’ve watched ants climb up the perfectly vertical wall of my brick house with ease. Apparently the prehistoric ants haven’t evolved to that perfection yet.

    I don’t see the problem anyway. The bet was “You wanna bet I can climb all the way up this cliff without falling?” The other ant answered “Yes.” So the second ant bet that the first ant could climb the cliff, which didn’t work, and thus the second ant lost. On the other hand, they didn’t settle on the stakes, so it’s moot.
