If this were any situation other than the Oscars (which, BTW, I have not watched since 1999), I’d be surprised, perhaps even shocked. But in the back of my head, I still can’t help but think that this was all staged to drive up steadily falling viewership over the years: “OK, they don’t want to hear us pontificate anymore. Here’s what we’ll do: Chris, you insult Will’s wife, and Will, you get up and slap Chris. Got it? Good… And make it convincing – we’re losing advertisers now!”
