We had one who would stand sideways at the top of the stairs when he heard someone coming up. At first I thought he just happened to be passing by when I was coming up. Then I realized he did it on purpose. It was the tail that tipped me off. He would stand sideways and hold his tail straight out, thus blocking the whole space. I called it “playing tollbooth.” You had to pay the toll in skritches and pets, then he would let you pass.
