I had a regular customer this woman’s age at Fry’s that I knew was lonely and ignored by her family so I let her do this. I’d explain to the rest of the line when she was done and between that and racing through helping them few ever seemed to mind.
At a pet store gig I had, there were always sweet older people who wanted to talk to you at the register. Also when you were on the floor. I would get looks from the managers, telling me to move on. They wanted me helping other customers and selling dog training classes, not talking to the poor lonely older people. I always felt bad when I had to cut them short and walk off. : (

Sometimes lonely people just need to talk.

Sometimes lonely people just need to talk but she should also be aware that the people behind her are also waiting in line and may be in a hurry.

I remember meeting people like that at the laundromat. In that context it was sad.
