Seems to me the places having less of a problem getting and keeping restaurant workers are the ones ditching tips and paying more. Sure, they’ve raised their prices, but adjusted for not tipping, it comes out as a push for the customer.
It also enables waitstaff to be able to take actual breaks and help people at any table in the restaurant. All of which improves service all around.
Who knew that the staff you gave lousy, treated like slaves, and then laid off would not want to come back to those crappy jobs you wanted them to work under the same conditions? Especially after they found work at better jobs with better pay while some states still allow the minimum wage for tipped workers to be $2.13/hour.
And while some do make good tip money, you’re either niave, stupid, or a reThuglican if you think they all do. There are too many cheap SOB’s who don’t tip much if anything at all, and you’re likely one of them.
And a lot of patrons treat the waitstaff like dogs already.
But remember this, if you treat the waitstaff badly you are offending (pissing off) the people in the back of the house too, and those people all handle your food. Think about that.
Service industry workers are tired of low pay and high abuse. I lasted a few short minutes in one job in my 20s because someone put their hands where they shouldn’t and I decked them. The way they are treated is unacceptable. I hope this situation brings about some positive change.

Free market economy, right? If you want employees to stick around. . .

If you could train a dog to deliver food, I’m all for it.

The food would definitely not make it to the table if it was our beagle!

Actually, with some of the waiters I’ve experienced, I’d prefer the dog. The only question I’d have is, what do you leave for a tip?

Around our local University campus, they have a fleet of cute little delivery ’bots who seem to mostly bring food to the dorms and offices.

Some of the restaurants I went to in Amsterdam had cats walking around in them.
