It all depends on how detailed and elaborate those “hopes and dreams” are. I would say you should be happy if your kids are productive, contributing members of society. If they achieve that full independence, then you have done well as a parent. Anything more than that is gravy.
Seriously, studies have shown overloaded children’s backpacks can lead to lifelong back problems. Believe me, back problems can squash a lot of dreams.
