Very true, and an absolute disgrace. Every time you’re in a supermarket and they have the little “Buy a bag of food for $10 to help those in need” things, you’re not only adding to their profit margin, but also THEY are the ones who claim the donation on their corporate tax report. Not only that, the majority of the donations they do give are woefully undergiven and often food items that are on the verge of spoiling and were about to be tossed anyway.
Far better to skip giving the likes of Safeway and Whole Foodsazon even more, and donate straight to local charities.
Wow…I so don’t miss those days. Years ago, I worked for a major Pet Store chain. At Christmas, not only did we ask for the normal stuff…buy a Puppy starter kit, push signing your dog up for training class, push moss balls (actual moss balls to put in a fish tank, but we were to try to sell them to everyone), plus the credit card machine asks if they would like to donate to the pet charities, at Christmas, we added stuffed animals they could buy to go towards the pet charities. The managers were close by, making sure us cashiers were pushing for all of this stuff. This is after the poor customer probably got bombarded with the same thing from other employees and manager on the floor. YIKES! I really felt for my customers. Now that I am just a customer, when I go to different stores, I try to remember what it was like to be that poor employee asking for stuff. That it isn’t them but the higher ups pushing for it. I decline as politely as I can. I do feel bad for I know that they will get a “talking to” by a manager for not “trying” hard enough. It’s so insane.
I do wish more customers would understand this is pushed on the employees and not take it out on them. If it ticks them off that bad, they should tell the manager or call corporate. At least yell at the ones who make the employees do it.
