“The Republican Party, the president, they thought they were so immune they thought they could say anything they wanted,” Powell said. "And even more troubling—the Congress will just sit there and not in any way resist what the president is doing. And the one word I have to use with respect to what he’s been doing the last several years is a word I would have never used before, with any of the four presidents I’ve worked for: he lies.
“He lies about things and he gets away with it because people will not hold him accountable,” Powell continued. “And so while we’re watching him we need to watch our Congress … Most of all we have the people of the United States, the ones who vote. The ones who vote him in, the ones who vote him out.”
It’s a terrible thing when the Pawn talks back to the King, isn’t it? And that’s all Colin Powell was to the Republican cause – a pawn to be discarded when no longer needed. He deserved better.
Interesting reason he says he voted for Obama in 2008 election was not because he prefered Obama over McCain because he saw Palin and the republicans who pushed for her inclusion on the ticket as a threat to the country. Talk about prescient!
Most Americans are Moderates. Our military officer corps leans Republican out of tradition dating back to 1865, not for being conservative. Remember history. The Republican Party began in the 1850s as the Liberal party, and had a Liberal wing well into the 1960s. Lincoln was a Liberal. The Republican Party has all but eliminated moderates only in the last 20 years or so.
General Colin Powell was a patriot and soldier first, a moderate politically. He remained true to the oath he took when he was commissioned. Keep that in mind when judging his service as Secretary of State. He was an honest and fair man. In an ideal state, Colin Powell would have been elected president in 2000. The ‘power’ in the GOP wouldn’t have it. This Nation would have been so much more Great if he had.
Before he passed away, My cousin Ed told me an interesting story. A few months before his tour in Vietnam was almost finished (1969) he was wounded a second time and after he was out of the hospital, he finished his time as a driver for his headquarters, usually driving staff and VIPs around in a jeep. One day he was assigned to drive a black Captain around. Ed told me was very professional and treated my cousin well as an enlisted. Many years later (1990?) he was watching the news and recognized that Captain as Collin Powell.
He was always a team player… and as a result, when “his” team turned on him during the Cheney / Rove administration, he was taken by surprise. One of the few recent Republicans I could tolerate. I’m sure in my inner heart that he voted against Trump.
Anybody praising the Rump gonna be surprised when he doesn’t show up at Powell’s funeral? Just like he snubbed the funerals of John Lewis and John Dingell. And if course just to be clear, the Mango Maggot was asked not to attend the funerals of both John McCain and Barbara Bush so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he is even asked to not attend services for the general as the Maggot is the type who might well attempt to turn the funeral into a media event solely about him.
Don’t re-elect Trump….If you want America to become a totalitarian, dystopian nightmare under the governing of corrupt quacks instead of a guy who is honest, outspoken, cares about the economy, and can still string two sentences together and doesn’t get cussed at everywhere he goes.

I wish he had been prescient and bold enough to say, “Don’t re-elect George W. Bush and his incompetent, corrupt crew.”

There’s nothing like taking advantage of someone’s death to grind a political axe.

We are not even thinking about relecting trump, unless it would be for a dishwasher position, and that is an insult to hard-working dishwashers!

General Powell had both covid shots. Yet he died from complications from it. Why? Are the covid shots truly valid?
