Don’t think I know you, but happy birthday all the same, tabbylynn.

I’ve never seen any other adult go by a first name in this strip. And I’ve read about as much of it as anyone can.

maybe he’s wearing a lap belt? Either that or the family car is pre 1970s before seat belts were mandated by law. Given that Calvin’s dad still believes in family values and resists modernisation, I could imagin him proudly driving a car that old.

The strip was originally done in the mid/late 1980’s, if I’m not mistaken…the seat belt thing wasn’t such a big issue then.

Happy birthday Tabbylynn! I remember turning 19, centuries ago lol!

My name here is a combination of my cat’s name Macushla and my name Alondra. Clever eh?

As for Calvin I don’t blame him. Reminds me of the Waltons. Jon Boy was the only one to have his own room but he always had to surrender it to guests and sleep on the sofa or in the barn. He told someone, “Oh it’s not my room, I only sleep there when we don’t have guests!”

Hi Tabbylynn–I’ll add a passing by Happy Birthday! Calvin looks to be wearing a lap belt to me, part of the reason he’s so annoyed, no doubt! Ah, those were the days, when no one knew everyone should be in a shoulder and lap belt.

True, although it does look like he’s wearing a belt. (From his right hand it goes into the cushion crease.) On the other hand, this was drawn in the ’80s, when such things as riding without a booster carseat or using a bike without a helmet wasn’t as dangerous as today. ;-)

Alas, Calvin has to give up for his own bed and let Uncle Max use Calvin’s bed to sleep on. Why don’t they have the pullover bed from couch so Uncle Max can sleep on it? :-/

Happy birthday, tabbylynn! I just turned (gasp!) 40 two months ago. Aaahhhhh, to be 19 years old again … !!!!!

Since mom and dad are both wearing seat belts, I can’t imagine they’re letting Calvin sit in the back seat without one — too many things could happen, badly injuring him. He may be an exasperating handful at times, but I can’t imagine they would purposely put his life in danger. I’m thinking that the heavy black line under/by his right hand is a lap-belt.

In pannels 2 & 3 it does look like Calvin does have a lap belt on. It also looks like he is sitting behind his dad. Pannel 4 gives the impression that he was sitting behind his mom, still possibly with a lapbelt on. I can understand the confusion. Having been 7 or 8 when this strip came out originally, I remember riding in the backseat of cars that only had lapbelts for the backseat.

I just realised you were talking about the strip! I think Watterson didn’t want mum and dad to have a first name as it would side-track from the main focus which is Calvin. I think that’s why uncle Max wasn’t reintroduced (gotta love wiki).

And Happy Birthday Tabbylynn - I’m in my early twenties too.

Happy Birthday TabbyLyn!! May your future be a bright and happy one and may all your wishes come true. One piece of advice…drinking age was 18 back in the 1970s when I became 18, sometimes it was fun, sometimes it was not. Just be careful what, how much, and who you drink with. Best Wishes on your special day!!

I used to think that I would have to share my room when relatives would come over, but with 11 siblings I never had too, five in one room woulda been too cozy.

BTW happy birthday (I suppose belated) tabbylynn I remember turning 19 way back in ‘07… good times
