What did he ever do to deserve Calvin?

Love the face of Calvin in the 4th panel - the worry that dad’s gonna be allright out on the streets. :D

Watterson’s art style was the best - details, angles, expressions - even for simple panels like these. Combined with his hilarious writing, he made C&H one of the best comic strips ever.

That was a REALLY dirty trick. Foolish to do that so close to Christmas, but it looks like the original date was late October (first panel).

No, attyush; he was skeptical at best.

“What did he ever do to deserve Calvin?”

He got in the back seat of the car with Calvin’s mom. You see it all the time…

If you stop and think about it, whether the paper is upside down or right side up, the graph line still goes down. REALLY!!! TRY IT!!!

GroversFather-truer words were never spoken, and it didn’t even take “Jack” to figure it out!

By cracky, yer right! Reading a dipping zag line left to right makes it work the same either way. Good catch!

My uncle and his daughter were both huge fans of C&H. When she was in the 8-10 range she would pull this same stunt on her dad. At her funeral several comments were made regarding the relationship between her and her dad and Calvin and his.

I find that ^ very touching. Made me grin with understanding.

Groversfather says: “If you stop and think about it, whether the paper is upside down or right side up, the graph line still goes down. REALLY!!! TRY IT!!!” Gosh, it’s true! The only way it would work is if Dad were looking at it from the back side, through the paper; but then it would be obvious. Or in a mirror. Grover has a smart daddy!

perhaps calvin justhad the graph sideways instead of all the way upside down… then it would be going down…

I’m a NOOB to GoComics but a long-time fan of Calvin & Hobbs. Top two comics EVER, in my opinion are Pogo and Calvin. This one, in my view, is Calvin as social commentator, Dad as the long-suffering target.

Re: the graph. The paper could be blank with Calvin’s limitless imagination. Unbounded by reality, he will never run out of ways to “tweak” dear ol’ dad.

Groversfather says: “If you stop and think about it, whether the paper is upside down or right side up, the graph line still goes down. REALLY!!! TRY IT!!!” Actually it depends on how the graph started. If the graph started by going up then when you flip it, it goes up; but if it started going down when you flip it, it goes down.
