As concerned as I am about the plight of women in Afghanistan, I am very cynical of the far right (including some who post here) suddenly crying crocodile tears about those poor Afghan women, while opposing the resettlement of Afghan refugees (or any other refugees) in the US, opposing a woman’s reproductive rights, opposing the simple and common sense equal rights constitutional amendment, healthcare as a human right, affordable child care for working women, aid to single parent families (most of which are headed by poor women) and other women’s rights issues.
Start showing some concern for women in this country and maybe then you can be taken seriously when you moan about women in predominantly Moslem countries.
At least under the dictatorship of communism women had equal rights as men. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, old norms re-emerged in some areas which restricted women’s rights. Which lends credence to my hypothesis that theocratic tyranny can be the most severe and repressive of all.
And of course the fact that many of these women are quite happy to wear such things – it is their religion and their culture after all- that our point of view on it is based on arrogance as much as concern for women’s rights. Example: there are Islamic women in France who CHOOSE to wear a headscarf who are being told they don’t have the right to follow their religion as they see fit. Yet French Feminists, instead of fighting for these women’s rights, think that THEY have a right to decide what everyone should want. Yet when it is an Indian sari – nobody is concerned about what she has on her head. So in fact, this is Islamophobia hiding behind the pretense of “women’s rights”.
in the end we are all animals. Nothing is going to change our base instincts. Unless the we can control our emotions there will alwaysbe: religion, but I love him/her, or an infinite other excuses to justifyour sordid behavior. and that will never happen.
