There are rare occasions when a coordinated, world-wide response is required. The fate of the earth — or at least human life on the earth — seems to be such an occasion. I would cede some national autonomy in order to survive as a species.
When we departed from moderation/self-respect/trust and polarized our religions and political factions creating a false “them” and “us”, we lost objectivity so badly that we not only avoid compromise but worse we ignore/diminish the dangers of global issues like climate change and pandemics. Religion and science have historically been complementary forces — with common goals, benefitting each other — in moderate times and opposing forces — leading to obstruction —in polarized cycles and the same is true of liberalism and conservatism.
You/We are not willing to give up what it would take to make a significant difference. Sure there are little tweaks around the edges to make you feel good.. but even those when analyzed create as much of a problem as they purport to eliminate.
One of our big problems is that so many of our citizens have forgotten that freedom includes responsibility. We want to be free to satisfy our individual needs without recognizing we need to protect the community good. We want to be able to pee in the pool without caring how it will affect the others in the pool.

And yet I would very much resist having some non-US entity forcing the US to do what needs to be done.

Need to find ways to make cleaning up our polluting ways profitable – then suddenly, a lot of deniers would change their minds…
